Sometimes you might see multiple open events recorded under the recent activities section of the contacts. Mostly, the recipients would open the emails quite a few times and it is purely considered as email engagement. However, there are times when you see open events with the same timestamp under the analytics section of any email campaigns or journeys. It is more unlikely for a contact to click open the emails within secs with the same timestamp. Below are the few factors that might help you understand the above scenario,
Email Clients:
Across all the marketing automation tools, the open activity is tracked using images /tracking pixels that are loaded from a tracking server with a coded filename. When you open the email, the image is called from the server and counted as a view or open event. Nowadays we have a preview pane in most of the major mail clients like Outlook, Gmail, etc; which records the open activity even when a person submissively engages with your emails. These events are sent to the email service providers and then pushed to the application instantly. Hence these opens become indistinguishable and mostly recorded with the same timestamps.
Bots/Spam filter:
The open events are recorded in large numbers and it could be more unlikely for a human to perform such activity in a faster phase. There are multiple security systems/spam filters/ virus scanners that check for malicious content and click the email links and sometimes perform an open activity before it could land the original email in the recipient's inbox.
Forwarding the email to another person:
Most of the time, we assume forward the email to another person is as same as the "forward to friend link" feature. But, it is slightly different because when a contact clicks on the forward to a friend link in any email campaign they might send a copy of the email to the new recipient however when you click on the forward button in the email client and forward the mail to another person, the emails are forwarded with original content and email activities are tracked back to original recipients.
Multiple email open events are captured with the same timestamp. Why?
